The Michigan State University Online Master of Science in Food Safety Program is proud to announce Ana Cecilia Lizarraga as the recipient of the 2025 Edward and Mary Mather Student Award. A May 2025 graduate, Lizarraga has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, dedication to food safety, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact on public health.

"Receiving this recognition is a profound honor and a humble reminder of the mentorship, encouragement, and collaboration that shaped my journey," said Lizarraga. "I am proud to share this achievement with all who made it possible."

As part of her master's degree studies, Lizarraga's final project explored the potential presence of undeclared allergens in granola bars and the risks they may pose to allergic consumers. Inspired by the widespread use of precautionary allergen labeling, often seen as "may contain" statements, Lizarraga sought to better understand how these warnings affect consumer safety and decision-making. Her work highlights the importance of strengthening science-based regulations to better protect individuals with food allergies.

"The final project process was both challenging and rewarding," Lizarraga said. "There were moments of frustration when testing capabilities were scarce, but the obstacles encouraged me to adapt and refine my approach, ultimately strengthening my confidence and deepening my appreciation for the role of science in protecting consumers."

The award recognizes not only Lizarraga's academic excellence, but also her vision for the future of food safety. Now serving as a professor in the School of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Universidad Autónoma del Perú, she is helping prepare the next generation of professionals while advancing food safety education and public health. She also plans to provide consulting services that help food companies strengthen safety and compliance practices through science-based solutions.

Complementing her academic work, Lizarraga brings more than three decades of experience in food safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance. She has worked with leading global organizations including PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, AIB International, Procter & Gamble, Clorox, and Shell. Throughout her career, she has led international food safety programs, conducted audits and training across multiple continents, and helped organizations strengthen food safety and quality management systems.

Through her dedication to research, education, and public health, Lizarraga exemplifies the qualities celebrated by the Edward and Mary Mather Student Award and represents the bright future of the food safety profession.
